Sima town (嘶马镇) in Jiangdu district is linked to the legendary Southern Song (1127-1279) hero Yue Fei.
During the southern invasion led by the Jin Dynasty (1115-1234) general Wuzhu, Yue was stationed in Guojia village, where the ground was covered with sand. He tied branches to horse tails and hung sheep upside-down from every tree at the village with front hooves on drums. At his signal, the horses ran, neighing loudly, their branches kicking up dust, while the sheep hooves hit the drums, creating a deafening noise that scared the enemy off.
In commemoration of this battle, the locals renamed the village as sima (嘶马), literally meaning neighing horses.
