Theater show sweeps Yangzhou over National Day holiday

Yangzhou's recently debuted dramatic stage show, Dayun Yangzhou, proved popular with visitors to the historic city over the National Day holiday (Oct 1-7), attracting audience numbers of 10,000 during its week-long run.

Staged at Yangzhou's Grand Theatre, the 70-minute performance tells the story of the city's 2,500-year history, culture, and spirit.

Among those who attended the performances was Yangzhou's very-own Party secretary, Xie Zhengyi, who praised the show for its homemade music and vivid depiction of city life throughout the ages. Xie said afterwards that the government would support the show as much as it could to further attract people to the city.

Dramatic arts fan and multiple-time audience member, Sun Yuzhen, 77, was greatly impressed by Dayun Yangzhou. "I could feel a strong sense of layers and dimension through the show which is unforgettable," Sun said, adding she had captured plenty of fantastic images during every performance. "Cameras don’t lie, I will show my children all the tremendous photos upon their returning home," she said.

By recreating local landmarks using the latest in cutting edge 3-D projection, the audience is able to be transported through 2,500 years of city life, said Yao Weimin, general manager of Yangzhou China Youth Travel Service. He added that with tourism hitting a popular trend currently, the city of Yangzhou is eager to integrate cultural essence into its tourism industry.

According to the Yangzhou Grand Theatre, the performance is exceptional, far beyond a common stage show, as it corresponds to the ethos of the city – enriched with historical culture breath without fickleness. Spectacular recreation of local landmarks combining cutting-edge 3-D projection technology offer audiences a sound and visual feast.

Dayun Yangzhou is staged each weekend and daily during peak tourist seasons. Ticket prices range from 488 to 588 yuan ($73-$88) per person.
