The color planning of downtown Yangzhou was recently awarded an Architecture MasterPrize (AMP).

Yangzhou's color planning stood out from among thousands of competitors from more than 70 countries and became the first Chinese urban color scheme to win the award, said an official at the Yangzhou bureau of natural resources and  planning.

The color planning was sponsored by the bureau and designed by Guo Hongyu, a professor at Guangzhou University, and her team.

"We developed a color spectrum based on Yangzhou's historical, cultural and natural characteristics, by analyzing the city's light and natural environment, culture, and traditional architecture," Guo explained.

The recommended color planning consists of five parts: "Yangzhou gray tones" derived from the gray brick walls of Yangzhou's ancient architecture, "bright moon white tints" derived from Yangzhou's moonlight and city flower viburnum, "misty rain cyan tints" derived from the view of the city in the rain, "warm-autumn tones" derived from the maroon wooden structure and hexagonal bricks of traditional residences, and "various shades of black" derived from roof tiles in Jiangnan (regions on the southern bank of the lower Yangtze River).

"We worked out a complex urban color planning for Yangzhou, applying typological methods and urban spatial analysis." said Guo.
