A total of 49 artworks from the collection of Yangzhou Museum known as "the Eight Eccentric Painters of Yangzhou", or Yangzhou Baguai, will be exhibited at Guangzhou Art Museum from Aug 28.

The exhibition, which is sponsored by Liaoning Provincial Museum and Yangzhou Museum, showcases 126 Yangzhou-style paintings from the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), including 15 national first-grade cultural relics and 70 national second-grade ones.

Yangzhou Baguai refers to eight famous Yangzhou painters: Jin Nong, Zheng Xie, Huang Shen, Wang Shishen, Li Fangying, Li Shan, Gao Xiang and Luo Pin.

For their unique accomplishments, they were called "wayward geniuses" and "excentrics" by their contemporaries. However, their unique personalities and innovative styles of painting came to be admired by later generations.

To provide visitors with an excellent visiting environment, the exhibition hall is decorated like Yangzhou-style gardens, with images of plums, bamboo and lotus flowers decorating the walls and grounds.

According to the organizers, the exhibition will be staged in two periods – from Aug 28 to Oct 18 and from Oct 22 to Nov 28. Some of the paintings will be changed for the second period.

Visitors will also be able to see detailed information about the works and painters by scanning the QR code below each work, organizers said.
