Thousands of teachers and students from 168 Chinese schools and organizations in 36 countries and regions enjoyed an online tour to the famous Slender West Lake scenic area in Yangzhou, East China's Jiangsu province, on Aug 1.

The event, hosted by Yangzhou government, lasted six days, enabling overseas students to enjoy the wonderful views and culture along the historic Grand Canal online.

The Grand Canal is a vast waterway system in China, running from Beijing in the north to Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, in the south. It stretches for nearly 3,200 kilometers and passes through eight provinces and municipalities.

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the canal is the longest and oldest artificial river in the world. It has played an important role in ensuring China's economic prosperity and stability, and is still in use today as a major means of transport.

Yangzhou has been working to develop the environment, culture and tourism along the waterway for many years. In 2019, the city hosted the Grand Canal Culture and Tourism Expo.

In addition to the online tour of Slender West Lake scenic area, students will also learn about local cultural heritages, including paper-cutting and puppet shows via the internet.
