As weather warms up in Yangzhou, East China’s Jiangsu province, specimens of the grey-headed lapwing, which breeds in Northeast China and Japan, are landing in the city.

Nearly 60 species of migratory birds, including swallows, herons and cuckoos, are on their way as well.

According to Zhu Jie, a bird-watcher in Yangzhou, the grey-headed lapwing is the earliest migratory bird to come to Yangzhou. From the end of March to May, many other birds will visit Yangzhou on their migrations.

Some birds stay in Yangzhou for a few days, to the delight of a good number of bird-watchers from other cities.

From the records of recent years, it's clear that a lot of birds of prey pass through Yangzhou during spring, such as goshawks, kestrel and red-footed falcons. The best time to see these birds is in April, and the best places are Tongshan Mountain and Nashan Mountain, Zhu added.
