Recall memories of winter through old objects

(chinadaily.com.cn)Updated: 2018-12-03

Minor Snow, the 20th solar term of the year, refers to the time when it starts to snow, and the temperature continues to drop. However, it is not the case this year in Gaoyou, a county-levelcity in Yangzhou, East China's Jiangsu province.

Stuffs used to exist in cold days have gradually become a thing of past as the warm winter becomes increasingly a common occurrence and the city's rapid development.

1.Pickled vegetables

When the winter arrives, the most popular commodity in the markets in Gaoyou is coarse salt in the past, which was used for preserved vegetables. Gaoyou people see the process of pickling as a big event and even set up a festival to celebrate it. The character "菜"(vegetable) has the same pronunciation as "财", which means wealth in Chinese, so gathering a large number of vegetables means accumulating wealth.

2.Puffed rice

Puffed rice, a bit like popcorn, is the most popular snack in winter in Gaoyou. Poured into a special jar and heated, the puffed rice rushes straight into the long bag with a loud bang.

3.Burning coals in stoves

When winter approaches, families begin to assemble stoves and bu coal in nearby coal yards in Gaoyou.

4. Bathhouse

Gaoyou people used to bathe together in a special bathhouse for the absence of water heater. Bathing in the bathhouse becomes a relaxing lifestyle at that time.

5. Hot-water bag

Fill it with hot water, tighten the lid, and put it into your quilt. When going to bed, you will feel the warmth in the quilt.

6. Snow cream

The creams with various brands used to be ladies'favorite in the past in Gaoyou. The strong and familiar fragrance could drag you back to the past childhood immediately.
